Parched : Not a Review

Parched movie cast: Tannishtha Chatterjee, Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla, Leher Khan, Riddhi Sen, Sumeet Vyas, Adil Hussain
Parched movie director: Leena Yadav

When I see Parched, I see it is a descriptive of the lives of women in Rajasthan and that you would always find bold, brave women in spite of the place – urban or rural. That is what that has stayed with me.

I especially liked the friendship that is shown between the three main women protagonists of Rani (Tannishtha Chatterjee), is a widow with a young son (Ridhi Sen) all set to marry a reluctant girl (Leher Khan) from the neighboring village. Lajjo (Radhika Apte) who is a childless woman and married to an abusive husband. Bijli (Surveen Chawla) is a local dancer who gets farmed out for money by her handler. All these characters are present even in cities.

While the friendship with the local dancer is frowned upon by the villagers Rani and Lajjo continue to be friends with Bijli, who is even approached by Rani’s pubescent son for favors. In spite all the problems that the three women deal with in their respective lives they come together with sheer abandon to enjoy, laugh and question why all the swear words in Hindi invoke women.

In a story where women uplift each other instead of pulling each other, shows that only when women are empathetic towards each other can a change come about. The climax is apt and ends at a crossroad where these women acquire a choice and have a liberty to fly.

Worth Mentioning, is the beautiful song Mai ri mai.
